The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) fraternity and leaders across the country are mourning the sudden death of former Technical University of Mombasa Students Association (TUMSA) President Elvis Otieno, popularly known as "Beast." The youthful leader died on Monday after reportedly suffering an epileptic attack that resulted in a fatal fall.
Beast, who served as TUMSA President during the 2023/2024 academic year, was widely admired for championing students' welfare, youth empowerment, and community service. According to TUM, only hours before his death, he had visited the Vice Chancellor's office while advocating for a financially struggling student to be allowed to sit examinations after securing sponsorship for the student's fees.

An outpouring of grief has since flooded social media, with political leaders, friends, and former colleagues remembering him as a selfless and dedicated servant leader.
On Tuesday evening, emotion filled the Technical University of Mombasa as hundreds of students, alumni, friends and supporters gathered for a candle-lighting ceremony in honour of the late leader. Led by the current TUMSA leadership, mourners lit candles, observed moments of silence, sang hymns and shared heartfelt memories of Beast's leadership and generosity. Many described the vigil as a moving celebration of a man whose impact on campus extended far beyond student politics.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo described “Beast” as a close friend whose commitment to empowering young people inspired many. Omollo recalled that they had spent time together watching the FIFA World Cup final at English Point in Nyali just hours before the tragic incident, saying none of them imagined it would be their last moments together.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir mourned Beast as "a larger-than-life personality whose presence, leadership and passion left an incredible mark on all who knew him." The governor extended his condolences to Elvis's family, friends and the entire TUM fraternity, saying his legacy of service would never be forgotten.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also paid tribute, describing Beast as a remarkable young leader whose kindness, friendship and dedication to serving others touched many lives. Other youth leaders, former student leaders and members of the ODM Youth League remembered him as a fearless advocate for students and young people.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be communicated by the family in the coming days.
